Abstract

This research aimed to find out students' difficulties in comprehending recount text. The subject of this research was the eighth-grade students of SMP N 1 Luhak Nan Duo. Out of 228 students, 14% of them were chosen to be the sample by using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected by using a document analysis and interview. The results of this research show that from 96 total frequent for each indicator. The first highest percentage of the wrong answers made by the students was in identifying series of events indicators. There were 64 total incorrect answers with the percentage 66,66% of identifying series of events indicators. The second highest percentage of wrong answers made by the students was in identifying re-orientation indicators. There were 48 total incorrect answers with the percentage 50,00% of identifying re-orientation indicators. Then, the last highest one is in identifying orientation indicators. There were 40 total incorrect answers with the percentage 41,66% of identifying orientation indicators. Related to the interview result, there were three factors that cause the students' difficulties in comprehending the recount text. The first was the language factor that is students difficult for the students to comprehend the long sentence in the text. The second was the lack of vocabulary, the students difficult to comprehend the vocabulary in text, and the last factor was the lack of student exposure to English language. It can be concluded that SMP N 1 Luhak Nan Duo students find it difficult to comprehending recount text. It proves that more than 50% of the students cannot answer recount text correctly. It is caused by the student difficulties in comprehending the long sentences in the text, difficult to comprehending the vocabulary in the text, and the lack of exposure to the English language.
