Abstract

This study investigates students' writing ability in constructing sentences in procedure text in the X Culinary class of SMK N 9 Padang by using descriptive qualitative methods through document analysis, observation and interviews. The findings reveal that most students demonstrated a “good” level of writing ability. However, some still struggled with sentence construction and verb usage, particularly in structuring steps effectively. The most common errors found included the use of inappropriate verbs, illogical word order, as well as errors in grammar and vocabulary selection. These insights emphasize the need for targeted instructional strategies to further enhance students’ writing ability in constructing procedure text. Therefore, more effective learning strategies, such as text modelbased approaches and repeated practice, are needed to improve students' writing skills.
