Abstract
The problems in this study are the lack of speaking skills in students, students being afraid and nervous about speaking using English, and students not being able to communicate well. This study aims to find out how the Talking Stick method improves students' speaking skills. This research was conducted at SMP N 2 Padang. The researcher only took one class as a sample. The sample consisted of 32 students from class VIII.1 who were selected using simple random sampling. This study uses a quantitative method with a pre-experimental approach. The experimental group learned using the Talking Stick method. The data collection tool is an oral test. The experimental group was given a pre-test and a post-test. The pre-test results showed that the average score of the experimental class was 48.59 and the post-test result was 75. Once the data was collected, the data was analyzed using the t-test formula. The results of the analysis showed that the t-test value > t table was 23.893 > 2.042. The last hypothesis suggests that Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. That means there is a significant influence on improving students’ speaking skills using the Talking Stick method.
